About this building

The church of Chantôme, located in Eguzon-Chantôme, in the region of the Center-Val de Loire, dates from the 13th century. Augustine monks from the Abbey of Benevento (Creuse) settled in 1245 near the birthplace of Saint Sylvain , which sometimes gives its name to the Church of Chantôme. This is where they built a small priory ensemble, of which there still remains some traces today, particularly the church.

The choir, as well as the first span is of the nave, are original, while the rest is newer. The building consists of a single nave covered with a barrel vault covered with plaster. On the first west span stands the bell tower, with a bell from the seventeenth century. The choir, which is also vaulted into a cradle, ends with a flat chevet with three bays and decorated with murals dating back to the end of the 13th century. They represent plant decorations, roosters and a way of the cross. There is also two polychrome wooden statues of Saint Sylvain and Saint Antoine, dating from the seventeenth century.

Major restoration works (choir restorations, murals, stained glass, etc.) were completed in 2017, restoring luster to the Chantôme church.
