Isenhagen Monastery

Founded in the 13th century, the Isenhagen Monastery was built at its present location from 1345 to 1350. Initially a Cistercian monastery, it became Protestant with the introduction of the Reformation in 1540. This Gothic brick building underwent a change at the beginning of the 18th century when the south and west wings of the monastery were demolished and from 1723 to 1726 a reconstruction in Baroque half-timbered style was carried out.

Janja Monastery was probably built in the middle or end of the 15th century and was destroyed at the end of the 17th century. After 400 years, Janja Monastery was restored to its original appearance on 22 July 2012, the date of its consecration. The iconostasis and chandelier were painted by the icon and fresco painter M. Ivan Kovalčik Mileševac from Novi Sad.

Jasna Góra is a sanctuary and a monastery founded in 1382 by Vladislaus II of Opole. The Duke installed the icon of the Black Madonna there in 1384, which thousands of pilgrims still come to venerate every year. Jasna Góra is seen as a symbol of Polish identity as one of the main pilgrimage centres of the country, but also as a fortified complex (since 1621) that defended Poland against foreign armies.

Ježevica Monastery dates probably back to the 14th century. Before the addition of the narthex and the Baroque bell tower in the 19th century, between 1846 and 1853, the church was about 12 metres long. It is assumed that the foundation form of the Ježevica church was derived from that of the Arilje church, and the Arilje church from the church of Žiča.

Jitianu Monastery was established in the 16th century. The church of St. Demetrius of Jitianu Monastery dates back to 1657. In 1690, and again in the early 18th century, the monastery was plundered by the Turks and Tatars. In 1802, the bell tower of the church was built. Throughout the 19th century the monastery was misused and by the beginning of the 20th century the monastery was in ruins. The church was restored in 1910, 1926, 1958 and 1988-89.

It is believed that the monastery of Jovanje existed before the battle of Kosovo in 1389. However, the present monastery was built in 1957 after the construction of Lake Medjuvrsje. The former church dedicated to St. John the Baptist was flooded during the construction of the hydroelectric power plant and Lake Medjuvrsje.

The origin of the monastery of Kamenac is linked to the despot Stefan Lazarević (1402-1427), its construction having taken place between 1416 and 1426. The monastery was destroyed after the arrival of the Ottomans in this region in the middle of the 15th century. It is not known to what extent it was damaged, however, it is known that the monastery church was renovated in 1547. A second renovation of the monastery was carried out in 1700. At the beginning of the 19th century, Kamenac suffered greatly from the wars with the Ottomans, so it was renovated many times during this century, which gave it its present form.
