The monastery of Břevnov is the second oldest monastic complex in Bohemia after the St. George's Women's Monastery located in Prague Castle. This Benedictine abbey was founded in 993 by Prince Boleslav II of Bohemia and St. Adalbert of Prague. At the beginning of the 14th century, the abbey was rebuilt. In 1420, during the crusades against the Hussites, the abbey was sacked by the Taborites and the surviving monks went into exile to the daughter abbey of Broumov. It was not until the 16th century that the monastery of Břevnov was reinvested.

Căpriana monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Moldova, mentioned for the first time in the 1420s. Having the status of a royal monastery, the monastery establishment has benefited from the care of several rulers of Moldova including Stephen III of Moldavia (1457-1504), Petru Rareș (1527-1538). The first stone church, dedicated to the Assumption, was built during the reign of Alexander the Good, around 1425. In 1840, a second church of the monastery was built, dedicated to Saint George, and in 1903 a third church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas. In 1962, the monastery was closed: a sanatorium for children with tuberculosis was opened in the cells. It was only in 1989 that the monastery reopened.

The Capuchin Church and Monastery in Varaždin were built at the beginning of the 18th century after the religious order obtained permission to settle in the town. Following the typical style of Capuchin buildings, its design is very simple. It is dedicated to the Blessed Trinity.

The Certosa di Pavia is one of the largest monasteries in Italy. It is part of the Carthusian monastic order, and was founded in the late 14th century. The cathedral is an elaborate and ornate example of both renaissance and Gothic styles, and is noted for its collection of artworks. In August of 1946, Benito Mussolini's illegally exhumed body was found in this cathedral resulting in two friars being arrested for conspiracy.

The monastery Cetățuia was founded in the 17th century as a medieval fortified complex capable of giving the sovereign and boyars support for armed resistance against the invaders. In ruins at the end of the 19th century, the monastery was restored during the inter-war period on the initiative of the historian Nicolae Iorga. The church of the monastery is said to be a copy of the church of the Three Hierarchs from the same period.

Intended to be the most important place of worship in Romania at the time of its construction, the neoclassical building was quickly destroyed by Turkish attacks. The monastery was secularised in 1542 with the Reformation and left to decay until the 19th century. Then the ruins were secured and partially reconstructed under the direction of Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
