Igreja das Chagas, Lisbon

The Igreja das Chagas is a church founded in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 18th century, after the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755.

About this building

The first church was founded in 1542 by Frei Diogo de Lisboa, a religious man who also instituted the Confraternity of the Wounds of Christ. The confraternity was made up of sailors who worked on the route to the Indies and other routes that communicated with the Portuguese overseas possessions.

The current building was constructed after the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755. The interior walls and ceiling are decorated with frescoes and tiles.
