Memory Church (Igreja da Memoria), Lisbon

The Memory Church is Baroque church in western Lisbon built on the site of the attempt assassination of King José I.

About this building

It was founded by King José I to give thanks for escaping the assassination attempt known as the Távora Affair in 1758. The construction took place between the 1760 and 1788 at the same site of the assassination attempt.

The interior has a Pombaline style typical of 18th century Portugal. The church houses the mausoleum for Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the first Marquês de Pombal, who was buried here in 1923.
