Saint-Gervais Basilica

The basilica of Saint-Gervais, a church located in the centre of Avranches, is known to house the skull of the bishop of the commune in the 8th century. About this building

Parish mentioned as early as the 7th century. The first building, built in the 17th century, had a facade tower topped by two domes. At the request of the city, a new building, which was identical to the previous one, which was considered dilapidated, was built in 1843 by the architect Cheftel. In 1890, the reconstruction of the front tower was undertaken by Cheftel fils. The work was completed in 1899. Inside, the nave is composed of a colonnade which receives an entablature hosting the penetration vault. Outside, the tower presents the passage from the square massif to the octagonal dome surmounted by a roof lantern.
