Saint Peter's Church

The brick neo-Gothic St. Peter's Church from 1878-1880 is a design by architect Charles Demaeght.

About this building

The furniture is older than the church itself: the stone baptismal font dates from 1597 and the two confessional chairs are early 18th century.

In 1896 the brothers Adrien and Salomon Van Bever (from Laeken) were commissioned to build an organ for the new church. The instrument fits in with the then prevailing romantic tradition. An organ festival is organized every spring. The Kortenberg organ builder Jean-Pierre Draps performed a restoration in stages.

The tomb of the de Villegas family is in the left side aisle. It is made of black marble and bears the coat of arms of the noble family de Villegas, the last gentlemen of the Graafschap Sint-Pieters-Jette.

Be sure to take a closer look at the carvings: the medallions on the confessional chairs, such as the medallion of St. Jerome (on the left), that of St. Gregory the Great (on the right) and that of St. Peter (above the left side altar, with the rooster on the left) .

The processional banners, in two places, come from the brotherhoods, lay organizations that were committed to a certain godly goal, which existed in the parish since the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century.

The showpiece of the church is the statue of Mary with the Child Jesus, at the front right in the church, a height of 1.90m. The baptismal font is perhaps the oldest artwork of the church (1597).

Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes Church

Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes church was built in 1949 in a modern Romanesque style. The church owes its name to the nearby Lourdes de Jette grotto, the object of many pilgrimages, particularly during the First World War. The chapel of the cave quickly became too small and the construction of a larger church was considered and then built a few hundred meters from the chapel. The church was designed by the Christian architect Chrétien Veraart and is built in brick with concrete elements. The church is now also home to a Ukrainian Greek-Catholic community, whose patron saint is Saint Volodymyr.

Koekelberg Basilica

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Koekelberg or simply "Basilica of Koekelberg" was founded in 1905 as a national monument and, after the First World War, as a pilgrimage centre to the Sacred Heart. The Art Deco basilica was only officially consecrated in 1951 and was fully completed in 1970.

Church of Our Lady of Laeken

A Gothic church, whose choir is still visible in the cemetery, has existed in Laeken since the 13th century. The old church was destroyed in 1872-3 to make way for the new church of Our Lady of Laeken, which was commissioned by Leopold I to house the remains of his wife Queen Louise-Marie of Orléans. Since then, this splendid neo-gothic church has served as a necropolis for the Belgian royal family.
