St Mary

St Mary

Redcliffe, GB

The Christian community has worshiped continuously on the site occupied by the church for well over 800 years. The first church may have built here in Saxon times, when Bristol first became a port. The original quayside was just across the road, below the red sandstone cliff from which this area gets its name. The present church is a treasure of international importance, a Grade I listed building that is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

St Mary

St Mary

Scarborough, GB

The church of St Mary dates from 1150. It is believed to have been built by the masons that were employed by the castle and whether this is true or not what is certain is that it is the place where they would have worshiped.

St Mary

St Mary

Prestwich, GB

Prestwich is not mentioned in the Domesday Book but there is evidence of a church on the site from at least 1200. The tower was built in about 1500 by the 1st Earl of Derby, and the body of the church was rebuilt during the early part of the 16th century. In 1872 a new chapel, the Birch Chapel, was added to the south of the chancel and to the east of the existing south Lever chapel; the Lever Chapel was rebuilt two years later.

St Mary

St Mary

South Hayling, GB

Hayling Island has been a 'holy' island since the late Iron Age when an important Celtic shrine was built. This wooden shrine was replaced by a stone temple after the Roman conquest after AD 43. By the late 7th century there is evidence of a series of minster churches. Havant was probably the minster church for Hayling and it is certain that a parish church was founded and dedicated on the Island in the late Saxon period.

St Mary

St Mary

Horncastle, GB

Standing in the market place, this is believed to be the third church built on the site. Built in the 13th century, the oldest part is the low tower which is surmounted by a small spirelet that is completely out of proportion with the rest of the building!

St Mary

St Mary

Manchester, GB

The Roman Catholic Church sought to tackle Manchester's deepest troubled area which lay between Deansgate and Albert Square. A church was built in 1794 in Mulberry Street on a site crowded in by intensive poor quality housing on land which had so recently been open meadow and grazing pasture.

St Mary

St Mary

Portsea, GB

St Mary's Church, Portsea stands on the oldest church site on Portsea Island, Hampshire, England, with a history stretching back to the 11th century. Archaeological research indicates that there was a church here in 650, although 1170 is the earliest date in recorded history.

St Mary

St Mary

Sisland, GB

The construction of Sisland church possibly started soon after the Norman Conquest, although very little of this early building now remains. Seen from the lane it is a thatched brick building, whitewashed except for where the windows and doors are picked out in red brick. There are heavy buttresses, which seem quite unnecessary, and a wooden bell tower rises at the east end.

St Mary

St Mary

Kirkby on Bain, GB

Close to the River Bain, a church has been on this site for about 900 years. Kirkby was mentioned in the Doomsday book in 1085, and it is quite certain that a church stood here in Saxon days. The present church of St Mary was built around 1802.

Marshfield, GB

St Mary's is a beautiful church dating back to the 12th century. It is nestled in the green belt between the cities of Cardiff and Newport, in the centre of Marshfield village. Its rural character makes it a beautiful setting for weddings, baptisms and other celebrations.
