The Church of São Cristóvão is a medieval building in the quarter of Mouraria. It was one of the few buildings that survived the 1755 earthquake almost intact. The church was added to the World Monuments Watch list in 2016 due to its worrying state of preservation.

The relics of the body of the Apostle and Bishop San Marcos are in this church for the veneration of the faithful. In 2016, the north pavilion of the church building, to the left of the façade, was converted into the "Vila Galé" hotel.

The oldest parts of the parish church of St Catherine of Alexandria date from the 15th century. In 1621, during the conflicts between Protestants and Catholics, it suffered further damage and was restored in 1627. In 1765, the bell tower was raised by about six metres and renovated. The present facade dates from 1818 and was designed by Jean Noyé, a native of Martinique.
