The mosque was built in 1995 and architects were Sevinsoy and Mabeg. The building, which is managed by the Islamic Foundation of the Netherlands, is characterized by two stubby pin minarets in the foreground and a dome more to the rear.

The Fatih Mosque, also known as the Small Mosque or Old Mosque, was built between 1502 and 1503 and was named after the conqueror of Constantinople, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The mosque is said to have been built on the ruins of a basilica, some brick walls of which are still visible.

In 1900-01 major renovations of the church were carried out. New, larger windows were carved from the boards of the old moat church. In 1949, a major restoration was started again with the aim of returning the church to the state it was in before 1901.
