Aosta Cathedral

Aosta Cathedral

Aosta, IT

The present Aosta Cathedral was built in the 11th century, probably at the request of Bishop Anselmo (994-1025), and was probably designed in the Nordic style, inspired by the main church complexes of the Germanic Empire in the Ottonian period. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the church underwent transformations and embellishments. In the 15th century, the church was completely transformed, especially inside (burial chapel, sanctuary, choir). At the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, a series of works on the body of the building gave it the appearance it still has today, such as the Renaissance-style façade built between 1522 and 1526.

Apold Fortified Church

Apold Fortified Church

Apold, RO

The three-aisles hall church originates from the 15th century, when the aisles of the former Romanesque basilica were heightened. The chancel and the nave were vaulted, and the walls of the side naves were replaced with octagonal pillars. A tower was built for the first time on the western side of the church and together with the nave and the chancel it was strengthened by adding defence levels between 1504 and 1507. From the fortification measures of the 15th and 16 century, the outer ring walls and three defensive towers have been preserved. The inner wall was demolished in the 19th century, but its path it is easy to track on the exposed foundations. On the north side a storage building equipped with loopholes survived the centuries. The church boasts several treasures in its interior: the neoclassical organ altar from 1821, a Gothic tabernacle, the pulpit and wooden galleries built in 1760.

Apoldu de Sus Fortified Church

Apoldu de Sus Fortified Church

Apoldu de Sus, RO

The fortified church in Apoldu de Sus was erected after the demolition of the old Romanesque basilica preceding it. A church hall was built in 1836 and completed with a tower in 1867. The interior is a nice example of a neoclassical church, where the altar from 1751 and the organ from 1816 are still preserved, both of them originating from the old basilica. Only ruins of the old fortifications still remain. Nevertheless, one can notice the well-preserved structure of the traditional village, with narrow walk paths and typical farms on both sides of the main road.

Apostolic Society

Apostolic Society

Apeldoorn, NL

The first church of the Apostolic Society dates from 1955. A renovation took place in 1995 by architect LW Immerzeel. Immerzeel had also built a second church of the Apostolic Society in 1993. Over the years, however, it became apparent that two churches were too many. The church on the Rademakersdonk remained in use. The church on the Alexanderlaan was sold to the Theological University of the Christian Reformed Church in the spring of 2005. (53-05).
