Torshälla församling
Torshälla, SE
The Torshälla Church is a medieval church building from the 12th century. It was originally built in a Romanesque style. The building stood on an old heathen sacrificial place. In 1317, the church became too small for the parish. Therefore, the old nave was transformed into a choir and a new nave was build in the west. During the 15th century a tower, porch, and vaulted ceiling were added. In 1614, the tower spire was rebuilt to reach a height of 92 meters. By doing this, the church became a landmark that was used for navigation on the nearby lake Mälaren. At the time, the spire made the church one of the tallest buildings in Sweden. The present lower roof was built after the tower spire and the roof were destroyed by fire, which was caused by lightning.
