Dublin's two cathedrals, Saint Patrick's Cathedral and Church of Christ Cathedral, are part of the Protestant Church of Ireland. As early as 1803, a committee was formed to build a Catholic pro-cathedral. George Papworth (1781-1855) was appointed architect of the pro-cathedral. Construction work began in June 1814, and the completion in 1825 was celebrated as a sign of Irish nationalism.
