Dionysiuskerk

Oene, NL

At first sight a remarkable church. The tower is built in on three sides and the south wall is very low, with a kind of farm windows. The tower was built in the 12th century near a Romanesque (also tuff stone) nave and had a chapel on the upper floor that opened onto the nave. Due to lack of space, they started working on it vigorously in the 15th century. A new, now Gothic choir was added, and side aisles were added under the same roof as the central nave, so resting on very low side walls. This is how the tower was built in. The Romanesque tower vault was demolished, creating a high portal that opened onto the side aisles and that received its light from a Gothic window in the west wall. Apostle figures, a Christopher figure and remains of saint figures were painted in the choir. This church is listed as a National Monument of the Netherlands.
