Completed in 1975 the church is shaped like the prow of a ship. It is now home to the Franciscan Oder and is named after Blessed John, born in Duns in the Scottish Borders at the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. It is the only remaining Catholic church in the Gorbals and maintains a tradition of holding a monthly mass in Lithuaninan.

The church was built according to the plans of architect Carl Berner in 1931. In the early 1970s, a new sacristy was built perpendicular to the north wall of the choir.

The name of the church comes from the bishop Ioan Bob, Romanian nobleman, at whose expense the place of worship was erected between 1801 and 1803. The cathedral of Bobbio was built from 1070 onwards and completed after five years in the Romanesque style, remaining almost unchanged in structure until the 13th century. In the 13th century, the floor was raised, the two arms of the transept were lengthened laterally, and the roof was finally completed, hiding the frames with the construction of the vaults. In 1463, the new façade was built in its current position, aligning it with the two side towers.
