Vercelli Cathedral

The present building of Vercelli Cathedral was built on the site of a church building dating back to the 4th century. In the second half of the 16th century, Pellegrino Tibaldi, redesigned the building, destroying what was left of the medieval church, including the choir and the presbytery; it was redefined with the construction of chapels on the sides, and new naves, these works were completed in the 18th century.

The Vereide church is a Romanesque whitewashed stone church. The tower with a porch was built in 1879. The choir and sacristy were built in 1931. At that time, the flat ceiling of the nave was also replaced by the barrel-vaulted ceiling. The windows, which were originally no more than half their present height, were enlarged in 1861. Only the baptismal font, rediscovered in 1904, remains from the medieval inventory. The church was extensively restored in 1631 and the interior was coloured in 1962 by the curator Bjørn Kaland.

The Verena Chapel is a baroque chapel erected between 1705 and 1710 on the former steep mountain path to Ägeri. Master Josef Brüell, from Vorarlberg, was responsible for the masonry work. The stonecutters were Michael and Peter Utinger from Zug. The dome was built by the Zug master Paul Sidler.

The period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown. First, it appears on a cadastral map of 1864, but the earliest preserved gravestone relates to the second half of the 19th century.

The exact period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown, but it can be assumed that it emerged in the 15th century. On 31st March 1943, 680 Jews were arrested and sent to Auschwitz via Salonika. Around 130 survived the Holocaust but by the 1990s only 2 families remained in Veroia.

The church was built on the orders of Louis XV who wanted to provide the so-called "Parc aux cerfs" district with a place of worship. A first temporary church was completed in 1727 and then in 1743, the first stone was laid. The construction was carried out under the direction of the architect Jacques Hardouin-Mansart, known as Mansart de Sagonne, grandson of the famous architect of Louis XIV. The building was completed in 1754. Ten years later, the architect J.F. Trouard built a chapel for catechism. It takes the name of the chapel "du Charnier" since it is there that the bodies of the deceased of the castle awaited their funeral. The organs of Clicquot were installed in 1760.
