Echternach Abbey and St Willibrord Church

Echternach Abbey and St Willibrord Church

Echternach, LU

The first church on this spot was constructed around 698, when Abbess Irmina of Oeren (Trier) made a gift of her properties in Echternach to Archbishop Willibrord, the founder of the monastery. The reconstruction from 1016 to 1031 created the Abbey Church much as it exists today. After its desecration by French Revolutionary troops, the abbey church was re-consecrated in 1868. The destruction of 1944 required lengthy reconstruction work that was only completed in 1953.

The nave parts of the church are built of wood, and above the ridge to the west is a square turret. The church burned down in 1887 and remained in a state of ruin until 1946. Efrathakerk

Overberg, NL

The Reformed Church (PKN) was put into use on the second day of Christmas in 1873. This is probably why it has the striking name "Efrathakerk". It was originally built as a small hall church. Over the years, the building has been expanded several times. The interior has also changed several times. The current interior was installed in October-November 1994 and comes from the (now closed) Paasbergkerk in Arnhem. The pulpit was completely rebuilt in 1994 based on the original pulpit from 1873. That pulpit came from Leusden and was lost in the 1940s.

The old ceiling decoration was painted and 17th-century frescoes were discovered inside.
