Stor-Elvdal church is a typical Trøndelag octagonal church, designed by architect S. Aspaas and consecrated in 1821. In 1890-91 the church was rebuilt by HM Backer and consecrated again in 1891. Interior is largely from Backers remodelling in 1890-91.

The church was built in the 13th century and was originally a Romanesque church with a flat wooden roof. The walls were unusually thick. The choir was a little smaller than the nave. According to the custom of the time, the north side of the church was windowless. A sacristy was added to the north side of the chancel.

The sacristy and chapel buildings are arranged across the main direction. The interior is raised by a plastered brick inner wall and woodwork with Gothic details.
