Hervormde Kerk

Siddeburen, NL

The oldest, Romanesque, part is the base of the tower and the two westernmost bays. This part was built around 1200. A few decades later, the building was extended in Romanesque Gothic style, with a recessed semicircular apse being built on the east side. The beautiful brickwork was hidden for years by a layer of plaster. Halfway through the 20th century, the church was restored, with the brickwork being made visible again. (Source: [1] )

The church is a single-nave, straight-closed church with a consistory. The late Gothic nave with natural stone corner blocks was built in the first half of the 16th century. The restoration took place in 1936 under the direction of A. van Essen, who also designed the consistory.

On Friday 16 January 2004, the church, which dates from 1280, was put back into use. It is striking that the vaults, reminiscent of the Catholic era, have been reinstalled. The gentlemen's pews, which were moved back during the 1978 restoration, are also back in their old place. Furthermore, moisture-resistant measures have been taken. The last service before the restoration was on 17 November 2002. During the restoration, church services were held in the De Wegwijzer community centre.
